Davit Gareja & Jeep tour pack
Extraordinary site with fantastic semi-desert landscapes – Davit-Gareja cave city, located 100km south-east from Tbilisi (70km by shorter partly unpaved road), was founded in 6th century by David (St. David Garejeli), one of the thirteen Assyrian monks who arrived in the country from Mesopotamia to strengthen Christianity and built many monasteries across the country.
Our guide and driver will meet you at your hotel. Drive to desert of Gareja. We will Arrive in Gareja at midday and will start walking up to explore Lavra cave monastery founded in the 6th century. The Lavra monastery is an inhabited complex of caves with a courtyard, church and other buildings. Continue walking up to Udabno* where you can have some rest and enjoy the view to Azerbaijan from Georgian side. Udabno is famous for its wall-paintings dating from the end of the 12th century. Second part of our trip will be jeep tour (upon request). We can visit Sabereebi caves,which is located east from the main site. Frescoes in the main cave church are rich in colors, remarkable and beautiful. There is no paved road, we will have to go through the deserted area with few shepherds by jeep. Frescoes date back in 9-10 cc. You can also visit Kolagiri in this jeep trip with remaining frescoes. Sabereebi monastery contains 5 cave areas. One of those caves has one of the finest and impressive examples of Georgian fresco art remaining. If you are interested, you will not regret visiting Sabereebi especially in other seasons except summer. Drive back to Tbilisi.
